In the afternoon of November 28, 2025, Mr. Lucas Oliveira Barbosa Lima, Deputy Consul General of the Brazilian Consulate General in Shanghai, along with two other delegates, visited the Shanghai Library East. Xu Qiang, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Library, met and held a discussion with Mr. Lucas in the VIP room on the seventh floor of the Library East. Deputy Director Xu introduced the construction and development of the Shanghai Library East, the "Reading Marathon," the 22 distinctive thematic libraries, over 1,500 annual reading promotion events, and the establishment of the "Shanghai Window" project in several Brazilian institutions. Mr. Lucas expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and mentioned that this year, high-level leaders from China and Brazil have exchanged visits, jointly designating 2026 as the China-Brazil Cultural Year. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture are currently planning a series of Brazilian culture-themed events to be held in China in 2026. Mr. Lucas also mentioned that Brazilian anthropologist Ms. Gisele Jacon is invited to Shanghai in April 2026, to promote her book The Brazilian People. As April coincides with Shanghai Library’s series of events celebrating World Book Day, Mr. Lucas expressed hope to collaborate with Shanghai Library in organizing a book promotion and donation event for this work. After the meeting, Deputy Director Xu accompanied Mr. Lucas and his delegation on a tour of the library’s key areas, including the City Living Room and Reading Promotion Zone on the seventh floor, the Art Library and Music Library on the fifth floor, the Reading Square and the Reading Theater on the third floor. The reception was attended by library staff from the Reading Promotion Center, the Acquisitions and Cataloging Center, and other relevant departments.
