Rotterdam Library: Portraits of Readers and Their Stories

Rotterdam and Shanghai are both port cities that enjoy world fame and that feature an open and colorful city life.

The photography exhibition ˇ°Rotterdam Library: Portraits of Readers and Their Storiesˇ± will be held on June 17-26 in Shanghai Library that introduces Rotterdam readers and their reading life to Shanghai residents. Mr. Ivo Opstelten, mayor of Rotterdam city, will attend the opening ceremony and deliver a speech thereby.

The exhibition tells the stories of a highly varied group of visitors to the Rotterdam Library who were photographed by Rotterdam photographer Frank Hanswijk. In the texts accompanying their photos, these readers relate their favorite books and the role that library plays in their lives.

The photography exhibition is the third joint effort between Rotterdam Library and Shanghai Library since the two parties signed a cooperation agreement on exhibition exchanges. In the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008, Shanghai World Expo Poster Exhibition and Enjoying Reading Exhibition had been respectively conducted with enormous success in Rotterdam Library, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation. The 32 photos capture the rich reading culture in Rotterdam via the vivid images of its readers.

Together with these photos, a special collection on Erasmus, consisting of rare books and modern editions from Rotterdam Library and Erasmus Center for Early Modern Studies, will be donated to Shanghai Library as well.
