1、Profile of the German Materials Section

The German Materials Section is located at the Friendship Library of Shanghai Library (fourth floor of the reading area). It was unveiled on November 3, 1999 and then German Chancellor Schroeder was present at the opening ceremony to cut the ribbons.

This Section was proposed by The Goethe Institute (http://www.goethe.de/enindex.htm) and funded by German Commercial Bank Foundation. The Bertelsmann AG Co., Ltd has contributed a number of books to the Section.

In line with the agreement between Shanghai Library and The Goethe Institute, the Library provides the Section with space, facilities and staff; the Goethe Institute, on the other side, offers regular supplies of German materials as well as training courses on language skill and expertise for staff working for the Section. It is in this kind of partnership that the Goethe Institute has set up a network of institutes, cultural associations, arts centers and reading rooms across the globe.

According to the most recent statistics, the Section has a collection of more than 3900 printed publications, over 700 multimedia items (including audio cassettes, videotapes and CD-ROMs), and 15 titles of German periodicals and newspapers, covering the areas of German culture, politics, economy, literature, law and history. All the materials are searchable through the online catalog of Shanghai Library and most of them can be checked out.

The German Materials Section is equipped with facilities to use the multimedia items. There is also a computer for readers to retrieve CD-ROM information and visit German websites.
